The challenge: Clean a live data center without compromising uptime

A major Southeast data center needed a higher standard of particulate control around active server racks, raised floors, cable pathways, and cooling infrastructure. The facility could not simply shut down equipment or clear the room for conventional cleaning.

The target was ISO 14644-1 Class 8 cleanliness, while maintaining continuous operations. Under ISO 14644-1:2015, the maximum concentration for Class 8 includes:

  • 3,520,000 particles per cubic meter at ≥0.5 microns
  • 832,000 particles per cubic meter at ≥1.0 micron
  • 29,300 particles per cubic meter at ≥5.0 microns

ISO 14644-1 classifies airborne particle concentration; it does not, by itself, prescribe a specific data center cleaning method. That distinction matters. A cleaning provider must combine the facility’s environmental controls, monitoring program, access procedures, and cleaning process without overstating what cleaning alone can certify. Read the ISO 14644-1 standard and review additional technical context from Setra’s ISO 8 classification overview.

The BioFresh solution: Precision cleaning built around risk control

BioFresh Pure Cleaning designed the engagement around one non-negotiable operating principle: remove particulate contamination without introducing static, moisture, lint, or disruption.

Our team used a documented process that included:

  • Antistatic HEPA vacuuming around server cabinets, raised floors, cable-management systems, and adjacent infrastructure.
  • ESD-safe tools and accessories selected for sensitive electronic environments.
  • Low-lint wiping methods for appropriate hard surfaces.
  • Dry, controlled techniques near active racks and network equipment.
  • Zone-by-zone execution to prevent uncontrolled movement through the data hall.
  • Coordination with the client’s IT and facilities teams before entering controlled areas.
  • Post-cleaning inspection and written documentation for operational records.

Our Data Center & Server Room Cleaning service is designed specifically for sensitive environments. It includes raised-floor cleaning, server rack and cabinet cleaning, network closet support, CRAC-area cleaning, staging-area cleaning, and post-cleaning reporting.

BioFresh used the same core discipline required in high-consequence facilities across the Southeast: plan first, control access, protect equipment, clean systematically, inspect thoroughly, and document the result.

Antistatic HEPA vacuuming: Why the equipment matters

A standard commercial vacuum may be acceptable for an office floor. It is not automatically suitable beside active IT equipment.

Data center cleaning creates two primary technical risks:

  1. Particle redistribution: An inadequate vacuum can capture larger debris while releasing finer particles back into the room.
  2. Electrostatic discharge: Improper tools, hoses, brushes, or fabrics can create static electricity near sensitive components.

BioFresh technicians used HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment with antistatic accessories to capture dust while minimizing re-emission and static buildup. HEPA performance is commonly referenced at 99.97% efficiency for particles at 0.3 microns, although the facility’s engineering and monitoring teams remain responsible for defining the complete environmental compliance program.

The cleaning sequence moved from higher surfaces toward lower surfaces, including overhead areas where applicable, cabinet exteriors, cable pathways, floor surfaces, and raised-floor zones. Technicians avoided disturbing cable bundles or floor tiles unnecessarily. Each action was deliberate because in a live data center, “cleaner” is not enough. The process must also be predictable, repeatable, and safe.

Zero downtime execution: How the work stayed operational

The facility remained live throughout the engagement, with zero minutes of cleaning-related downtime. This result was achieved through operational controls rather than speed alone.

BioFresh coordinated:

  • Approved work windows with facility leadership.
  • Technician access and escort requirements.
  • Equipment staging outside sensitive zones.
  • One-zone-at-a-time cleaning.
  • Clear pathways around active racks.
  • Stop-work criteria if an unexpected condition appeared.
  • Final walkthroughs with the client’s representative.

This approach protected the customer’s most important business outcome: continuous availability. The goal was never to make the crew invisible. The goal was to make every movement controlled enough that cleaning became a managed facilities activity—not an operational event.

“Mission-critical cleaning is not about moving quickly. It is about eliminating uncertainty before the first tool enters the room.”

“La limpieza de instalaciones críticas no consiste en moverse rápidamente. Consiste en eliminar la incertidumbre antes de que la primera herramienta entre en la sala.”

The five-step framework facility leaders can use

Facility directors and operations managers can apply this framework to any data center cleaning project.

1. Assess the environment before scheduling work

Document the data hall, server rows, raised floors, cooling units, access points, restricted areas, and known contamination sources. Identify whether the space is operational, idle, under expansion, or supporting a customer SLA.

2. Define the cleaning and compliance objective

Clarify whether the goal is routine particulate control, preparation for an audit, post-construction cleaning, contamination response, or support for an ISO Class 8 target. Align the cleaning scope with the client’s engineering and compliance teams.

3. Approve tools, chemicals, and access controls

Require ESD-safe equipment, HEPA filtration, low-lint materials, approved products, and trained personnel. Confirm background checks, escort policies, PPE, work permits, and emergency contacts.

4. Execute in controlled zones

Clean methodically and avoid simultaneous activity in multiple critical areas. Protect airflow pathways, avoid unnecessary equipment movement, and coordinate continuously with the facility contact.

5. Inspect, report, and improve

Complete a final inspection and provide documentation covering the areas serviced, methods used, observations, and recommended follow-up. Use the findings to refine the recurring maintenance schedule.

The result: A repeatable standard for mission-critical facilities
